What kind of plays do you do?
We are committed to pursuing excellence through the exploration of plays that have thought-provoking themes that address social and moral issues affecting us today. We look for plays that are both contemporary and classical, including works by emerging playwrights. We are dedicated to producing work that not only challenges, enlightens and entertains, but will hopefully provide platforms for deeper discussions after the audience has left the theater.

Why establish a theater in Washington, DC?
Founder, Deborah Kirby, originally moved to DC because she fell in love with the city and with the vast number of theaters available to her to work as an actress. This was an exciting theater town with lots of different kinds of work being produced and the town didn't hold all of the stress and harshness that she found while living in New York. Deborah was and is constantly drawn to the real-life drama of living in the nation's capital. In DC, decisions are being made that affect the entire world! What better or more challenging place to be to stage drama that will potentially touch the lives of people everywhere.

Why create a faith-based theater?
Journeymen Theater Ensemble was founded and is guided by Christian principles. Those principles are pursued so that we can best:

  • Create excellent work that reflects the freedom of inspired faith in Christ
  • Produce plays that don't simply entertain but challenge, inspire, delight and uplift
  • Foster a safe and creatively challenging environment for theater artists and
  • Meet the needs of the community

Why should I come see plays at Journeymen Theater?
If you are looking to be entertained - you will be! If you are looking to leave unaffected - we can't promise that. Come to see good theater done well!

Do you only produce Christian plays?
No. Our vision is to produce plays that honor God and are artistically excellent, regardless of their spiritual or non-spiritual nature. Our aim is to stage dramas that pose questions and provoke meaningful discussions, not simply that propagate our beliefs.

How is Journeymen Theater planning to help the community?
We continue to look for ways to partner an outreach project with each of our productions. As soon as we have our own space, our vision becomes much more broad since we will have the capacity of meeting our neighbors and understanding and hopefully meeting their needs.

Do you only hire Christian actors, designers, and technicians?
Absolutely not! We are an inclusive organization that welcomes all to work with us. We want to foster an environment that is encouraging and creatively challenging to artists - regardless of their faith.

Are you an evangelistic organization?
We are not a traditionally evangelistic organization. Our plays do not have overtly Christian or evangelical themes and we do not "preach" to those who work for and with us. That being said, we do provide a place where people can ask spiritual questions.

Are you affiliated with a church?
We are not affiliated with a church, although we hope to have the support of many churches as we produce dramas that we feel honor God.

Do you accept plays for consideration in your upcoming seasons?
Absolutely! One of our goals is to work with emerging playwrights and we are dedicated to producing at least one new play each season. We also have monthly Saturday morning play readings so that we can hear new plays.
